Unveiled at that year's Paris Show, the 550 Barchetta Pininfarina drew on a lineage of open front-engined twelve-cylinder Ferraris-the 166 MM, the 250 GT California, the 365 GTS/4-cars that defined the formula of the V12 grand touring roadster. Luca di Montezemolo had asked Sergio Pininfarina for a design that captured the spirit of these machines, and the answer was a roadster built on the foundation of the 550 Maranello berlinetta.Only an emergency manual soft-top was included, intended for use at modest speeds when caught in rain, a deliberate compromise that preserved the purity of the Barchetta concept and kept curb weight nearly identical to the coupe despite the chassis reinforcement. The car was equipped with standard leather-trimmed carbon-fiber racing seats and carbon-fiber cabin trim, distinctive two-piece modular alloy wheels, Scuderia shields on the front fenders, and a brushed aluminum fuel-filler cap. Backing it all was the renowned 5.5-liter, 65-degree V12 of the 550 Maranello, fed by variable-geometry intake manifolds and producing 479 horsepower, with power sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed gated manual transaxle.Production totaled just 448 examples, all built for the 2001 model year, each carrying a numbered plaque bearing Sergio Pininfarina's signature. Two decades on, the appetite for limited-production Ferraris has climbed toward a fever pitch among collectors, and cars like the 550 Barchetta-analog and finite in number-sit squarely at the center of that attention.Completed as the 24th of 448 examples built-one of just 127 destined for the U.S. market-this 550 Barchetta Pininfarina was delivered new through Miller Motorcars of Greenwich, Connecticut. Its first owner specified the car in Nero D.S. over a warm Cuoio leather interior-a restrained, elegant combination that sets it apart from the many examples finished in expected Rosso Corsa. According to the Barchetta.cc color registry, a non-exhaustive but detailed record of 550 Barchetta production, just 14 examples worldwide are recorded in Nero D.S., only two of which carry matching leather extended to the roll hoops and only two specified with Cuoio; this car is the sole example on record combining both. The accompanying CARFAX Vehicle History Report traces a well-kept and modestly driven life. Through the 2000s, the car remained in the Northeast, covering only a few hundred miles each year and returning regularly to Ferrari Philadelphia of Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, where it was serviced diligently. Around 2009 it relocated to Florida, where it continued to receive attentive care-first from Manfred's Automotive, Inc. in Naples and later from Ferrari Fort Lauderdale. In September 2021, the car received comprehensive attention at Ferrari Los Angeles exceeding $15,000, including replacement of the intake manifold gaskets, fuel pumps and lines, motor mounts, power-steering hoses, and a full annual service, with the invoice retained on file. Acquired shortly thereafter by the current owner in 2022, the Barchetta has since been the subject of a thorough mechanical and cosmetic recommissioning carried out by Ferrari Philadelphia. An August 2023 visit brought a fresh annual service and four new Michelin Pilot Sport tires. In April 2024, the car returned for a major service exceeding $76,000-encompassing the full belt and tensioner-bearing replacement, cam seals and cover gaskets, spark plugs, all fluids and filters, renewed fuel pumps and lines, a fresh A/C compressor, coolant hoses, factory mufflers, and inspection for Ferrari Classiche certification.Alongside the mechanical work, a thorough cosmetic recommissioning was carried out, which saw the passenger airbag leather refinished, the Alcantara renewed throughout in OEM material, the steering-wheel leather repaired, the center switch bezel and inner mirror-triangle trim replaced, the front belly pan renewed, and the gear-shift knob rebuilt to original specification without the sun-induced hazing that commonly afflicts these cars. A further April 2025 visit to Ferrari Philadelphia attended to annual maintenance items and a fresh battery. The cumulative investment since 2021 approaches $100,000 across mechanical and cosmetic work, and the result presents in phenomenal condition inside and out. The cabin is devoid of the Alcantara pilling and “sticky buttons” that so commonly afflict these cars, while the lustrous Nero finish is protected throughout by paint protection film applied prior to the current owner's acquisition and showing no signs of discoloration. Displaying just over 5,700 miles from new, the car is accompanied by its Ferrari Classiche ''Red Book,'' Schedoni five-piece luggage set, emergency soft top, and car cover. Between its matching-numbers, Classiche-certified status, elegant factory finishes, and substantial recent attention, this Barchetta presents as one of the finest and most diligently cared-for examples of the 448 built.
