Description

  • Trade-in car.Sometimes, all you need to do is look at a car's name. Montreal. Not Milan, not Turin, but a city on the other side of the Atlantic. Quite unusual for an Italian sports coupe. The explanation is actually quite simple. In the late 1960s, Alfa Romeo unveiled a striking concept car at the World's Fair in Montreal. The response was so overwhelmingly positive that the company decided to put it into production. Fortunately, they did. Otherwise, the Montreal might never have existed. When the production version finally arrived, it remained remarkably faithful to the original concept. The signature partially covered headlights, the distinctive air intakes behind the side windows, and the muscular lines immediately set it apart from any other Alfa Romeo. Even today, it is the kind of car that keeps your attention just a little longer. Yet perhaps its greatest appeal lies beneath the hood. While many sporting coupes of the era relied on powerful four- or six-cylinder engines (with notable exceptions such as the Maserati Ghibli and De Tomaso Pantera), Alfa Romeo chose a completely different approach. The Montreal received a 2.6-liter V8 derived from the engine developed for Alfa Romeo's legendary Tipo 33 racing cars. Naturally, it was adapted for road use, but it retained a character entirely its own. Producing approximately 200 horsepower and paired with a ZF five-speed manual transmission, it delivers exactly the driving experience you would expect from an Italian grand tourer of this period. The Montreal has always occupied a unique place within Alfa Romeo's model range. With fewer than 4,000 examples ever produced, it remains a model you simply do not encounter every day. This particular example tells an even more compelling story. This 1972 Alfa Romeo Montreal remained in the hands of the same owner for no less than 45 years. That often says more than an entire archive of paperwork ever could. It was driven as intended, meticulously maintained, and genuinely cherished. There is more. This Montreal comes from the collection of Fred van Lingen, a name that needs little introduction among Alfa Romeo enthusiasts. Van Lingen was renowned for his technical expertise and unwavering commitment to originality. As you would expect, both the engine and the transmission were rebuilt by him—precisely the components you want to know have been entrusted to the right hands. This is not a car that has been over-restored only to spend the rest of its life on concours lawns. Quite the opposite. Its condition is honest, beautifully preserved, and exceptionally well cared for. This is exactly the kind of Montreal you climb into, turn the key, and simply enjoy driving—as Alfa Romeo intended. Finished in the stunning Rosso Marrone, a color that arguably deserved a permanent place in Alfa Romeo's catalog from day one, this Montreal wears it beautifully. The rest of its story? We would be delighted to tell you in person. Contact Gallery Aaldering today and discover this rare Alfa Romeo Montreal for yourself. We export our vehicles worldwide—please inquire about the available possibilities.
