- Sports cars and reliability/solidity don't often go together. But with Volvo, they do. American Irv Gordon drove a whopping 5.1 million kilometres in his 1966 Volvo P1800S. With the original engine (overhauled only once) and gearbox and 3 water pumps, the Volvo achieved the staggering mileage. The model was designed in 1961 by Swedish designer Pelle Petterson then working at the Italian bodywork company Frua. Production of the P1800 began in 1961. Due to the great popularity of the Amazon and the, unplanned, continued production of the PV544, Volvo itself had no production capacity for the P1800. Therefore, production of the bodywork was outsourced to Pressed Steel in England. In the winter of 1968, sheet metal and body production moved from Pressed Steel to Volvo's Olofstrom plant. The type designation was then modified by adding the letter S from "Svenska" (Swedish), while the 'P' was dropped: the P1800 thus became 1800 S. This beautiful example was imported from sunny and rust-free California in 1997. Carefully restored by the then owner in the Netherlands, the car is still in sublime condition now after 25 years. - WindshieldsSportauto's en betrouwbaarheid / degelijkheid gaan niet vaak samen. Maar bij Volvo wel. De Amerikaan Irv Gordon reed maar liefst 5,1 miljoen kilometer in zijn Volvo P1800S uit 1966. Met de originele motor (slechts 1 keer gereviseerd) en versnellingsbak en 3 waterpompen haalde de Volvo de ontzettend hoge kilometerstand. Het model werd in 1961 ontworpen door de Zweedse ontwerper Pelle Petterson destijds werkzaam bij het Italiaanse carrosseriebedrijf Frua. De productie van de P1800 begon in 1961. Wegens de grote populariteit van de Amazon en de, niet geplande, voortzetting van de productie van de PV544 had Volvo zelf geen productiecapaciteit voor de P1800. Daarom werd de productie van de carrosserie uitbesteed aan Pressed Steel in Engeland. In de winter van 1968 verhuisde de productie van plaatwerk en carrosserieën van Pressed Steel naar Volvo's fabriek in Olofstrom. De typeaanduiding werd dan aangepast door de letter S van "Svenska" (Zweeds) toe te voegen, terwijl de 'P' kwam te vervallen: de P1800 werd dus 1800 S. Dit prachtige exemplaar is geimporteerd uit het zonnige en roestarme Californie in 1997. Door de toenmalige eigenaar in Nederland is de auto met zorg gerestaureerd en nu na 25 jaar is de auto nog steeds in sublieme staat. Uitgebreide documenatie is aanwezig.Accessoires
