Description

1961 JAGUAR E-TYPE 3.8 SERIES 1 OBL FLAT FLOOR ROADSTER (#38)

We are delighted to be able to offer to the market our 20th June 1961 Outside Bonnet Lock (OBL) Flat Floor Roadster

Dating from the first few weeks of production, this vehicle is one of the earliest surviving right-hand drive Jaguar E-Type roadsters (the chassis number sequence commenced at ‘850001’). Many of these very early cars were sent by the factory to Jaguar dealers for use as demonstrators, and chassis number ‘850038’ (the 38th right-hand-drive roadster) was despatched to Appleyard’s in Leeds. The accompanying JDHT certificate states that the E-Type was manufactured in June 1961 and records the first owner as ‘Jaguar Distributors Demo car’.

⁃ Single family ownership 1963-2013
⁃ Unbroken history 1963 to present
⁃ 32,000 warranted miles
⁃ 2022/23 mechanical restoration which total around £58,000 via CMC.
⁃ Original Outside Bonnet Lock Car
⁃ Original body tag
⁃ Former concours level restoration
⁃ Flat floors, welded bonnet louvres
⁃ Marque expert rebuild to factory spec
⁃ The most desirable of all e-types
⁃ Heritage Certificate
⁃ Original and rare chrome work including hockey stick post chromes, and upper post caps, lower windscreen chrome, door finisher chromes and butlers rear light chromes.

Accompanied by original toolkit, bonnet opening tool, the original operating, maintenance and service handbooks, various period leaflets, periodic maintenance vouchers (completed up to 17,522 miles in 1967), a period Tuning and Preparation of E-Type Cars booklet, two lever-arch folders of paperwork.

A Jaguar E-type roadster in its pure, original form is something very special – an automotive icon.

Our car number #38 of less than 500 OBL cars ever made during the first five months of production in 1961 and only 91 in RHD

Early 1961 E-type OBL cars have over 50 unique features not seen on later 61 cars, #38 retains all the important attributes of a very early E-type including: flat footwell floors, bonnet locks secured with a T-key, welded-in bonnet louvres made from separate metal pieces, a double-hinged boot lid and wing baffles spot-welded inside the bonnet, larger half shafts, and a unique rear bulkhead to the monocoque and boot floor.

#38 is deserving of a place on the lawns at any top tier concours d’elegance and amongst the finest car collections anywhere in the world.
