Description

Chassis No. ZFFFD60B000160781

In the early 1970s, a client by the name of Bob Gittleman walked into Chinetti-Garthwaite Motors' Paoli, Pennsylvania showroom looking for something different, and Luigi ''Coco'' Chinetti Jr. obliged, working with designer Gene Garfinkle on a design that took its cue from the 250 GT SWB Breadvan but resolved it into a far more elegant and practical tourer. A Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona coupe, chassis number 15275, was the basis for the one-off. Panther Westwinds of Surrey executed the aluminum coachwork, retaining only the windscreen, A-pillars, and doors of the donor. A conventional tailgate was dispensed with entirely in favor of a pair of glass wings hinged at the roof, and the eight instruments were lifted from behind the wheel and mounted in an upright panel at the center of the dash. The finished car reportedly cost its owner the equivalent of four new Daytonas.

More than fifty years later, Niels van Roij Design has revived this one-of-a-kind design. The Daytona Shooting Brake Hommage is a single commission, undertaken for a client who approached the Dutch studio with the specific request to design an ode to the 1972 car. It is built upon a front-engined 2009 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, with the naturally aspirated V12 left in its original specification. Some 15,000 hours of design exploration, digital surfacing, CAD engineering, and hand execution followed. Every exterior panel save the doors has been newly hand-formed in aluminum, the roofline lifting slightly above the driver before falling away in a continuous curve to a sharply raked Kamm tail, resolved without rear bumper interruption or shutlines.

The Chinetti car's defining flourish returns in modern form. Electrically operated butterfly side windows, carried on precision-milled aluminum hinges with drilled detailing, swing upward to open the luggage compartment, while the rear glass remains fixed. At the front, bespoke full-width lamp units conceived in CAD and realized in 3D-printed carbon composite reinterpret the amber graphic that distinguished the 1972 car from its coupe siblings, the blade running above the Daytona script and into polished, hand-formed vertical grille vanes. At the rear, lighting sits behind tempered glass within a trapezoidal tail architecture, above four exhaust outlets integrated into a carbon fiber diffuser. The wheels are polished in reference to the original's chrome wire, and the calipers finished in satin silver.

Inside, cognac leather trims the seats, dashboard, door panels, headlining, and luggage bay, sculpted over hand-formed aluminum structures, with carbon fiber serving as the secondary surface in place of the 1972 car's walnut. The instrument binnacle is again mounted centrally. Behind the occupants, six CNC-machined aluminum runners are recessed into the carbon parcel shelf, with the outer pair engraved ''Daytona Shooting Brake Hommage.''

Accompanied by German registration documents (dated 2009) and fresh from its unveiling on the lawns at Woodcote Park this past July, this one-of-one Hommage represents an unrepeatable opportunity. Van Roij himself called the commission an honor, noting that ''there is a unique sense of occasion in creating something that will never be repeated.'' For the collector drawn to Ferrari's long tradition of coachbuilt specials, it would serve as a centerpiece, and as a car that cannot be duplicated.
